Audience Feedback-Font Ideas

I have asked a few people what they think is the most ideal font to use for the name of my magazine on the front cover this font will be used for my logo and magazine name.
The most populaur font that got the most votes was called fluffy slacks my audience said they thought  this because it relates well to the target audience and type of genre of the magazine. Also because it appeals to the persons eye and is catching for the name and logo of the magazine which is crucial as a selling part to it.The font also feels magazine like and looks like a sort of scrap book and although its been cut out of a newspaper. This relates well to the genre of the magazine as it looks vintage and old.

Sneakerhead BTN Shadow font this is the font that was the most popular in my audience feedback.I have chosen to use this in my magazine.

More specific-Contents Page

On my contents page I will also include one or two pictures of bands and solo artists, I will also include something that will appeal more an audience like "Suscribe and get 50% off your next purchase" so the audience will be satisfied with what they are getting when they purchase their magazines.I will incluse exclusive interviews with solo artists and bands on the contents page, also pictures of them and The top ten weekly chart hits.

Mrs D

Well done - you have completed your research before the deadline.

Your initial ideas are good - they could be a bit more specific in terms of 'other' bands/artists on the contents. You will have to be careful when drafting with your colour scheme. Keep up the good work.

Font Ideas

For my font ideas throughout my magazine and masterhead I have decided to use serif this will allow me to make the font look more interesting and appealing to the audience. This will also suit my target audience very well.I choose many different types of fonts to fit the genre and audience of my magazine I want it to look grungy but not to rock like I would like it to look more indie style.I used all different styles for the font ideas-This is going to be the name of my magazine. So I thought I would research which font I like the best, as this is important in my magazine as it is the logo and magazine name which people need to remember the most and should stick in their minds.I chose to have my font against a black background as I think it would appeal more to the audience and look more interesting, it also contrasts well with the black and white colours, and looks vintage.

This is the ideas for my logo name and masterhead for my magazine:

Name Ideas

-Off Beat
-Rock and Roller
-MM (Music Matters)
-Uncut

The name I have chosen for my music magazine is MM.I chose this because it is an abbreviated version of music matters, which is a company based on some products to stop illegal downloads etc, also music does matter and plays a very big part in todays world.I think it will help people to remember the magazines name and logo easily as it is short and snappy, which will allow it to stick in their minds. Also the use of MM and M being repeated twice this could allow them to remember it more easily.A short name will also appeal more on a magazine because people will not bother to read a long name of a magazine.

Construction Schedule

This is my Construction Schedule of what I am going to do and the date I am going to do it.I used Outlook Express to get this calendar.

Planning

Target Audience-17-19 or 20 year olds
Genre of magazine-Indie/Pop
Sold-Main stores eg tescos, sainsburys and smaller stores eg tesco express and corner shops
Front cover- A solo artist on the front with different articles around to make the magazine seem packed and as though there is alot inside- using different sized fonts and colours
Contents- be clear and organised but also interesting have more pictures than text, every picture has a small article at the bottom informing the audience of what the article is about - I would base my contents page to be similar to the magazines i analysed which were NME and Q. The colouring will be different from the house style as i dont want to distract the readers attention of the pictures and articles from bright colours and fonts, I also want it to look proffessional
Double page spread-I would like my double page spread to be based on a solo artist (the one who is featured on the front cover)The colour scheme will still follow on from the normal house style used on the front cover of the magazine.I would like the main focus to be on the big picture of the artist but i would also like to include smaller pictures around it of the artist. There will also be information of the artist like: Information about them - interviews,Tour dates etc.
The house style will be all the same throughout the magazine as I want it to look professional to the audience.
I would also like to base my magazine more to the female audience, however it can still be read my male audiences aswell of the specific age range I have chosen.I would like my font colours mainly to be black, white and some pinks or purples.I would like to price my magazine at around £3.50 as I think this is a reasonable price for whats inside the magazine. There are many different ideas and options that I can come up with for my magazine I will need to think about all the features that will appeal and attract my target audience which are:
-Images
-Contents
-Colouring
-Name
-Cover lines

Double Page Spread Analysis NME2

The double page spread that I have chosen to analyse is about the main focus story on the front cover and contents which is about Reading and Leeds festival. On the right hand side of the page there are interviews with the audience on their views of Green Days performance, this allows the reader of the magazine to gain more information on what the festival was like and allows them to feel more included in the festival experience. Also it shows the specific audience clearly as people who are interested in Green Day are more of the indie/Rock audience therefore people who are reading this magazine will be interested in this genre of music and be willing to read about it and find it interesting. The pictures that are included within the magazine , are all from the festival which are live pictures- this again includes the audience as a whole group allowing them to see the insights of what the festival is like and what experience people had.The pull quote on the double page spread "This is the best worst kept secret in England" This will appeal to the audience as they will be intrigued into reading more about the festival and the experiences people have had and their views on it.The images show most people with their hands up, drums and guitars.Which relates to the audience of the magazine being indie/rock as most festivals that people go to, include this type of music that people are interested in.The colours of the double page spread follow the house style of the magazine with red, yellow, black and white. This shows the magazine professionalism and that it was thought up well by desginers. The long shot on the main image of the magazine allows the audience to view what the festival was slightly like and some of the bands that were playing there.

Contents Page Analysis NME2

The contents page of NME is set out clearly in sections which allows the reader to be able to view the pictures clearly and see which picture and quote goes together and the page it is on, so they can find it easily. The background of the page is white, so the images are more clearly set out and arent distracted by anything in the background. The title of the contents page reads "INSIDE THIS WEEK"In bold capitals, this symbolises that is important to what the reader is going to read and stands out from the rest of the text which is in much smaller font. There are many different pictures on the contents page that the audience can focus on which pulls in many different people who are interested in different genres of music,  the biggest image which is focused in the middle of the page is Reading Festival, again live pictures make the reader feel more included in what they are seeing and lets them have part of the experience that other people had when they were there,The page number on which each article is on is shown very cleary in red coloured font, this allows the reader to be able to know clearly and remember which page each article is on without them having to keep flicking back and forth to view which article they want to read about. The Reading and Leeds headline title for the article is in different font which makes it appeal and seem different from all the other articles that are on the page.It also relates to what the main focus is of the magazines front cover. The box at the bottom left of the page there is a bright red box, which stands out from the rest of the page and contrasts well against the white and black background. It reads inside that the audience can save 35% on the full prices of the magazine if they suscribe to the magazine this would appeal well to the audience as they will be more intrigued into buying the magazine as they see that the magazine gives them a good deal for their money. The language used is aimed specifically at the target audience of the magazine as one artists article includes "This song is about fighting,so dont be pussies" This is aimed to the target audience as other people who dont generally read the magazine may find it offensive or rude, whereas normal buyers will be used to this type of language.

Front Cover Analysis of NME2

The front cover of the magazine I analysed was for NME- this has been shortened from New Musical Express which can show that it is aimed at a younger audience as it is easier for them to remember and seems more young as it has been broken down and abbreviated. This genre of magazine is for indie/rock type of audience that like rock music e.g. Greenday and Indie like the Foo Fighters. The front cover of the magazine is very bold and bright and would appeal easily to the audience when it is on shelves, the yellow, red, white and black contrast very well together as using two boring colours against whiter ones has a big impact. The front cover has two images which are medium close up of two different artists from different bands, here the colouring has a red line to one artist and the other artists background has a black bacground. This relates to the big yellow font in the middle that says "Battle of the rock gods".The colouring shows this as the squiggly line in between the two artists is made to look as though it has been ripped apart this can relate to the younger audience being more to the male side than the female side because men are more interested in as violence and fighting appealing. The medium close up pictures are also taken of the artists in their live shows this is good as it is promoting live music showing it is professional and real , and allows the audience to have a clear view of what the artists are really like in their live shows it also allows the audience to feel as though they were there at the concert and are included within it.Which can encourage them to go and see the shows.Towards the bottom of the page there are also many smaller images of different bands who were at Reading Festival, which the magazines main focus is on.It allows the audience to view pictures from the festival giving them more of an experience if they went there and some memories but also an insight into what it was like for people who didnt go there, the many images show that there is alot to offer inside the magazine and the audience will be enticed to buy the magazine as they will most likely be satisfied to what is inside. I know this issue of the magazine mostly points at a indie/rock audience because as the main focus is Reading Festival it is based on this type of audience. The black and red normally relate to violence and fighting, however the yellow contrasts this and makes it more appealing to take away the fighting and making it brighter and more happier to the audience. The colours also relate to the colouring of the Reading festival logo linking it all into the audience as the magazine has the same audience as the people who visit Reading Festival it also links well to the whole house style of the magazine. The font is all in capitals with some big font and small fonts used, which makes it stand out more and seem more exciting from the audiences point of view.

What I Have Learnt From Research

From looking at different types of magazines, and on the internet of music magazines.I learnt that for the type of genre I am looking at to base my magazine on I need to use simple colours that contrast well together e.g. White and Red or Black and White. And maybe include another brighter colour that will also brighten up the page to make it more appealing to the audience when it is on a shelf. Also I need to make sure that on the contents page of the magazine there is different articles that are available to the target audience, and many pictures of the artists are available so they have a clear view of what and who they are reading about in the magazine. Also I picked up that the front cover needs to be the most eye catching and appealing to the audience with little bits of information that they can pick up on in order to see what will be inside the magazine and be satisfied with it before buying it.Also I learnt that magazines shouldnt be too over priced, as many sales are declining because of the internet and pricing on the internet is much cheaper therefore customers are going for the cheapest products which are on the internet. From looking at research I have chosen to do an indie/pop magazine as it was the most popular type of magazine in the age group I was looking for and was the most popular type that is sold in stores. My target audience that I have chosen to aim the magazine at is for 17+ year olds as this was also the most type of common age group to read theese types of magazines.

Product Placement

Genre of Magazine-For my genre of the magazine I have chosen to do indie/charts/pop music
I would like to sell my product in shops like Tesco,Sainsburys-Main supermarkets. And then littler shops like corner shops in villiages or high streets and small shops like Tesco Express.I would like to price my magazine at around £3-£3.50. For my magazine i want to make it quite bright and colourful to attract the readers attention, also i will use some darker colours to contrast them together to make it stand out more.My magazine will have the same house style on each page apart fromt the contents which will be more plain, I will also include my logo on most pages so the reader rememmbers the names and logo of the magazine.

Mrs D

Well done Charlotte. You are working well and well on your way to reaching your first deadline. You link the 3 pages of each mag in your analysis and pick out some good details. It is still a little vague in terms of links to genre and specific audience. What is the genre and how do you know this? Keep up the good work.

Double Page Spread Analysis NME Magazine

I chose to analyse a double page spread about The Ramones, I think this was good to analyse as I could link it in well with the audience and genre which is indie/rock music I know this because the this is the type of audience who listen to bands like the Ramones. The double page spread follows the house style of the front cover and the contents page of the magazine which again shows the professionalism and shows that the magazine is all in one. On the left hand side there is a medium close up of Joey Ramone himself, similarly to the front cover he is wearing ripped jeans with sunglasses and he also has long black hair. This relates to the audience of the magazine and also the genre as some of them may be interested in this fashion and clothing , the image being in black and white can show that the band is quite old fashioned and maybe the style of music was popular around that time. The white based background on the other side of the page makes the article look organised and bright and appealing to the audience, whereas if it was dark and gloomy people wouldn’t be interested in reading the magazine as it probably wouldn’t appeal to them or catch their eyes. The big text about the ‘life and death of Joey Ramone’ will appeal to the audience as they could be flicking through the magazine, and come across a big font which tells them about the story in a short sentence also for the specific type of audiene as they will be appealed to this type of genre of music. The pull quote allows the reader to know little snippets of information that is included within the article, this will catch their eye and appeal to the audience as they will want to read on with the information they have been given it is also highlighted in bright colour which will also entice the audience and catch their eyes in contrast to the text on the page which is plain black. The columns on the page are well set out and clearly organised, making it easier for the audience to read the text. Mode of address mostly addresses Joey Ramone and describes his personality, his appearance and lifestyle. This relates to the audience being of an indie/grungey style of genre and mostly young adults or in some cases older adults who were around to listen to music of the Ramones or know of Joey Ramone as a person.

Contents Page NME Magazine

The contents page of the magazine offers lots of different stories and articles featuring different artists e.g. The Ramones opinions of themselves as a band, Willis’s Earl Beal’s opinions and views of himself and more stories on peoples views on them as bands or artists and others opinions on them. The language used throughout the contents is encouraging and appealing to the audience “The new albums like the old stuff... Only better” said by The XX. Which makes the reader more encouraged to read on and have better knowledge of their new album that may be coming out. The colour scheme is different to the front page having plain black and white, I think NME did this so it didn’t distract the reader’s attention from the many articles and stories advertised and made it clearer and easier for them to read important information. In the corner of the page a bright red box says “Save £1 an issue” inside, the colour of the box and the text inside will appeal to the audience as it will make the audience feel as though the magazine benefits them in many ways by giving them entertainment and information but also saves them money and gives them their moneys worth as there is so much on offer. There are many images on the contents page of this magazine, this is good as it shows there is lots of different contents on different artists and bands, this can relate to the audience being of different ages and genres as there are many different artists places on the page, it will also help the audience know what page different artists are on and have a clear view of what the story is about and who it is also about. The bold writing of short information about the articles shows their importance and signifies to the audience that they should read it, for insight on what they will be reading next. Also the types of bands and artists that are on the contents page will appeal to the audience as it is aimes at the audience interested in rock/indie style of music.

Front Cover Analysis NME Magazine

The music magazine I have chosen to analyse is called NME meaning New Musical Exspress. The magazine is an indie/rock genre magazine, pointing to an audience of younger adults rather than teenagers I know this because the types of bands and artists that are featured throughout will appeal to this audience mostly . The front cover of the magazine is very bright and bold with colours pink, white and some black. At the top of the page the master head of NME is clear and bold, bigger than other font on the page, This enables the reader to be clear of the magazine name and help with the publicity of the magazine as it is clearly shown and it will catch peoples eyes when on shelfs. The main issue of the magazine is the ramones, you can tell this because the bigger font on the page says the Ramones, this would interest their target audience and catch peoples eye as they may be interested in reading all about the band or learning more about them. The cover line also describes them as outcasts, rebels and legends. This shows they are a well known band and will help to make the magazine more public and successful as more people will be interested or encouraged by the Ramones being on the front. The main image is a medium close up of the band Ramones, which also shows that they are the main story of the magazine. It is easily recognisable and clear to the reader which band it is, with all the headings and the pictures. The band are all dressed in similar ways with jeans, leather jackets and black long hair and two of the group are wearing sunglasses. This can indicate that because they are a band they like to be similar to one another and have the same style and appearance, their style also relates well to the audience and genre of the magazine and indie and grunge bands are most likely to wear this sort of clothing and appear scruffy but they aren’t. The white and pink colouring against the black dark grey background contrast well together and make it clear to the audience and easier for them to read what is included inside the magazine. The fonts throughout are all of similar or the same style, this relates and points out that the magazine is professional. The writing in boxes on the right hand side of the page are quite messy and come across as informal , this can relate to the Ramones being “Outcasts, Rebels and Legends” as if to say they don’t care about anything however they are popular and successful. It can also relate to the rebelliousness and carelessness that the band promote, however the genre and the audience of the magazine wouldn’t find this offensive and will understand their behaviour.

Double Page Spread Q Magazine

The double page spread I chose to analyse is of the Rapper ASAP Rocky. The heading on the top of the page following the house style again, says ‘Q NOW’ this heading shows that the music magazine is very up to date and encourages the reader to read on as many people are interested in reading up to date magazines and know about new artists and hottest ones in the month or week that they read the magazine. Underneath it explains what the page will be about in a little short sentence, encouraging the reader to read on and know more about “the month’s hottest new talent”. The main focus of the double page spread is of the artist himself, which shows the audience what the artist looks like and his appearance therefore this will help them to remember what he looks like and keep an image of him in their heads, Also if they haven’t heard of the artist before they may be willing to read on to know about the type of music that he makes and creates, even though some of his image may give this off they will be willing to read on and learn more about him. The article has been placed in a greyish coloured boxed which makes it easy and clear to read for the audience it also fits well with the theme colour of the page being quite dark with greys and blacks- which shows the professionalism of the magazine. On the side of the article, at the bottom there is a website and more additional information for the reader, this will encourage them to read more of the magazine and think they are getting the most of their money as it gives them additional and helpful information. The pull quote at the bottom of the page on the right hand side also follows the house style of white and red, this will follow well with where the audiences eyes are focused on the page as it will first go to the picture and then on
the pull quote which will give them more information on what they will be reading about within the magazine.

Content Analysis Q Magazine

On the contents page of Q magazine , the colour code and house style of writing continues to follow , the main colours of the magazine being red, white and black showing the magazine has been well set up and is professionally designed to look good and appealing to the audience. The contents page is quite minimal with only a few small pictures and one large picture, which focuses the audience on the biggest picture. On the top of the page the logo of Q is shown again to raise the publicity of the magazine and remind the reader of the magazine name. The headings of what each pages contents are are put into a bolder text to make the reader see it more clearly and appeal to them as they may be interested in the artist. Allowing them to look easily for the artist they want to read about the most without having to flick through and find it themselves. Again the house style of red and white matching to the logo of Q , are the page numbers this helps the reader to take note of them and remember the page that they want for which artist or story it covers. The articles of each heading are written shortly underneath to give more information off to the reader of what they will be expecting to read about them artists or band , this could make them more encouraged to read on into the magazine. This represents the audience to be more interested in indie/grunge style of music and more young adults and teenagers, and those who are also interested in the media and music on the telly as it talks of The Brit Awards and Simon Cowell.

Front cover Q Magazie Analysis

The magazine I have chosen to analyse is called Q.The Red colouring background of the Q in white contrasts very well together because they are both bright colours that catch the eye very quickly. Making it appealing to the audience who will be willing to buy this magazine when it is on the shelf. The close up of Florence And The Machines face , makes all the front cover based on her, with no other bands or font around her apart from what she is saying inside the magazine. This makes the audiences eyes focus on her and know immediately what the magazine itself is about, this is ideal for the audience who are interested in the singer Florence and the Machine, and I would say the age range for this magazine is for teens to younger adults. The colour Red which is all on the front page including Florence’s hair, immediately directs the reader’s eyes onto the magazine. The cover line son the right hand side of the page are in different sized fonts, with the word Florence in big lettering it points clearly to what artist the magazine is about and also relates to the front cover of the magazine clearly supporting that it looks mostly all about Florence And The Machine. The close up of Florence and the Machine shows clearly her hair colour and make up. Her hair colour being a reddish colour can connotate that the audience is more aimed at women than men , as women look for the colour red, and it also has some sexual connotation which could appeal to men as finding the colour red attractive. Her make up is quite heavy and fierce which can show her personality to the audience making them willing to read more in the magazine about her. On the spine of the magazine each week Q the artists who are included in the magazine are written on the side, so the reader can have extra information and know fully what they are getting before they buy the magazine which will make them more satisfied.
